Stories of Me Dementia Forum

Advocate, author and international speaker, Kate Swaffer, encouraged everyone to ‘see the person, not the dementia’ as she shared her stories of dementia from the inside out at our 2016 Dementia Forum, held in Sydney in September.

An expert of the lived experience, Kate captivated 200 delegates as she discussed her diagnosis of younger onset dementia at the age of 49 and her ensuing commitment to raising awareness of the human cost of dementia, as well as breaking down the stigma and myths to improve the care and quality of life for people living with dementia and their families.

“We are mothers, fathers, lovers, daughters, wives or husbands, employees or employers, friends, grandmothers, aunties,” she said. “It is a tragedy that so many only see our deficits.”

BaptistCare volunteer, carer and dementia advocate, Alan Gravolin, also shared his personal story of his wife Lyn’s life as an artist over the past 20 years and their experience with the onset of dementia.

BaptistCare Wins ITAC Award for YouChoose

Our new YouChoose website YouChoose.org.au took out the top gong at the Information Technology in Aged Care (ITAC) 2016 awards in Melbourne last November.

The website, which enables customers to customise their home care package, won both the best consumer-friendly product award and the overall winner award.

Developing the YouChoose website was a collaborative effort between our Marketing, Communications, IT and Home Services teams to deliver a customer friendly and customer focused solution for those seeking to remain independent and living at home.

YouChoose.org.au is a user-friendly and accessible online tool that puts the customer firmly in control of their care by offering them choice and true visibility over cost, anytime, with no pressure to commit.

100 year-old in Wagga

Wagga Wagga resident and BaptistCare home services customer, Mrs Thersa Hillier, celebrated her one hundredth birthday thanks to a life lived with kindness and helping others, on Friday 9 June 2017.

Thersa’s milestone birthday party was held the following day in the local Senior Citizen’s Centre, with a crowd of well-wishers, including five generations of family, many of whom travelled from as far away as Queensland to share in her special day.

Thersa moved to Wagga Wagga in 1964, and has been in the same house ever since. A strong and independent woman who lived through the Depression, World War Two, and the tragic death of her eldest son, Thersa has always been resolute in maintaining her independence.

“Mum is a strong lady; you’d have to be to reach one hundred. She used to be pretty stubborn about taking care of herself. Since BaptistCare have been visiting her, she sees the benefits of having them there to help her stay at home for as long as she can. They have since become firm friends, and we couldn’t do it without them,” said Marleen, Thersa’s daughter.

Empowering customers 

To help meet the evolving needs of our customers, and remain competitive in a consumer-driven home care market, we launched an ‘Empowering customers through unique solutions’ sales training program across our Home Services teams in February 2017.

The training material and content was developed in partnership with Open Learn and Be You Not Them brand agency. It involved an in-person training session and work book, supported by six online modules, hosted on our own online learning management system.

Home Services managers and care facilitators completed the training, which covered topics such as knowing and understanding our customers, developing personalised care solutions, building relationships and being friendly, curious and active.

Easter Show Has Visitors In A Spin

In the midst of Sydney’s 2017 Easter Show extravaganza, BaptistCare sponsored Senior’s Day at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. BaptistCare staff and volunteers shared popcorn, prizes and show bags with approximately 2000 visitors who passed through our stand, perfectly positioned right next to the Show’s Amphitheatre.

BaptistCare’s ‘YouChoose’ was the highlight of the day, showcasing the services offered by our home care team. Visitors were also given the opportunity to learn more about our aged care centres, retirement living, and the valuable work carried out by our community services and community housing staff.

To our surprise, the hit of the day was the YouChoose instant prize wheel.

Rivalling the queues seen on Easter Monday, eager participants stood in line awaiting their chance to spin and win. With everyone guaranteed to go home with a prize, the wheel spun throughout the day, stopping only to point at the next cap, umbrella, chocolates and other fun prizes.

New Allied Health Funding

BaptistCare received new funding to provide Allied Health services in Western Sydney and the Murrumbidgee region, giving our customers further access to care and support as they live in their home.

The Allied Health service includes occupational and physiotherapy assessment and intervention services, and demonstrates our commitment to delivering care using a wellness and enablement approach.

Customers are assisted with home safety assessments and modifications, falls prevention education, mobility, balance and gait training, recommendations of self-care aids and equipment, and physical and cognitive rehabilitation.

This approach assists our customers to live the life they want and supports them to remain as safe and independent as possible in their home and community.

Funding Renewed for Homeless Seniors

Seniors experiencing homelessness in the Central Coast and Hunter regions will continue to be the focus of BaptistCare’s Assistance with Care and Housing program (ACHA), with new funding received under the Commonwealth’s Home Support Program in June 2017.

The program offers assistance to people over the age of 50 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and experiencing disadvantage, social isolation, ill health, financial stress and family breakdown.

More than just securing safe and affordable housing, the ACHA team navigates critical matters such as financial support to meet both accommodation and care needs for seniors, as well as offering practical support and much-needed confidence to remain living in the community.

This includes valuable information and referrals, enabling customers to liaise with government agencies and service providers, providing temporary assistance with daily activities and care and forming relationships in the community through social groups.

ACHA has been operational on the Central Coast since 1998 and we were pleased to see an expansion of this program, with double the amount of funding received through the growth tender round, in addition to extra funding to expand this program in to the Hunter region. The program is funded to continue until 30 June 2020.
